Recycled Plant Containers

We started many of our garden plants from seed this year using empty spinach containers.  These were excellent seed starters because they worked like mini greenhouses when we first planted our seeds.  Just put a few inches of soil in the container, plant seeds, cover with soil according to seed packet directions, lightly water, lightly cover with plastic lid, and place in a sunny spot.  Many of the seeds germinated in a couple of days.  For instance, the seed packet for my organic beets states that the seeds will germinate in 14 or more days.  In my little recycled "greenhouse" the seeds germinated in about 5 days.  It's amazing!  As you can see in the first picture, the string beans and snap beans took off like crazy.  They were just about flowering only a few weeks after planting.  I will definitely use this container technique next year as it was very successful.  We just transferred our plants outside this past weekend with 2 days of lovely spring rain showers to follow.  So far they are thriving well and we're hoping for a wonderful harvest!

Zucchini recipes needed - help!!!! hahaha We had zucchini sandwiches today for lunch. Pan fried zucchini slices in olive oil w/ garlic & onions. Seasoned with salt, cajun seasoning & a little bit of freshly ground pepper. Put it on toasted whole grain bread with a little bit of grated rice mozzarella cheese. It was delicious.

Yep there everything carliflower claims about them. Devoured about a dozen tonight. Just an easy to eat crunchy finger food that makes for a nice snack too. I suggest mixing a little texas pete with catchup as a dipper.....

I had the same problem with carrots the first time I planted them & never planted them again :-( If I had to guess, it's probably "Mr. Bunny" haha

Just a tip for buying "organic" fertilizer. I was torn between buying the organic brand at twice the cost of Scotts garden fertilizer. After carefully reading the small print I noticed the Scotts bag said that it was made from "organic ingredient" that was enough for me.... cha-ching!

Lesson - read the label you might be getting organic without paying for it!

My goal is to grow killer mutant Basil this year. We used rabbit fertilizer in the past, made the leaves HUGE! No more rabbit though. Need to find a replacement.

Wow, wish I knew that when we were in Hatteras. We could have saved all of the fish carcasses that the guys threw away. That's a great tip. Will do that next time the guys go fishing! Thanks!
